Choosing the perfect place for your next family vacation can be tough. You want somewhere that has something for everyone to enjoy and doesn’t break the bank. Perfect family-friendly destinations typically have a good range of amenities and facilities with infrastructure that makes life easy for travelers. Parents often worry about safety, food options, accommodation and if there are enough attractions and activities for the kids to enjoy themselves.
For Europeans, the Mediterranean coast is a popular place for families looking for summer fun. The sunny weather, tasty food, beautiful beaches and wealth of attractions draws visitors aplenty. The abundance of islands offers even more choices for a families looking to get off the beaten path a bit. For those of us in the US, it’s often daunting to pick a place so far away. After some research, I have come up with some top recommendations for family-friendly destinations in the Mediterranean…all of which I am dying to visit. While you can do all of these on your own, you could also consider a Mediterranean cruise which could include it all with no hassle!

1. Dubrovnik, Croatia
The historic UNESCO-listed city of Dubrovnik sits right on the coastline, providing a perfect blend of beach days, culture and city exploration. Families can spend time on the sandy beaches as well as time exploring the coast with a sailing trip. Walk the city walls, explore the old fortresses of Revelin and Lovrjenac and gaze up at the towers of Bokar and Minceta. The Fort of St. John, Dubrovnik Cathedral, the Square of the Loggia and the Cultural Historical Museum are other highlights. Even with the cobblestone streets, the old city of Dubrovnik is filled with strollers all summer long as this city is easy to get around, has plenty of great food options and has an abundance of things to do if you are here for a few days or a week.
2. Corfu, Greece
Greece offers so many opportunities for exploration and relaxation, it’s difficult to narrow down just where to go! At the top of our list is the large Greek island of Corfu. Stunning beaches tempt visitors, and it’s easy to explore scenic villages and olive groves. Family-friendly destinations and attractions on Corfu are plentiful, including the many popular resorts for families including Agios Gordios, Sidari, Glyfada and Paleokastritsa. If you are tired of the beaches, take a boat ride around the coast or go horseback riding through the lush hills and countryside. Whatever you choose, you will enjoy discovering the highlights of the historic Corfu Town.
3. Sardinia, Italy
Families from all over the world flock to Italy every summer, but not as many make the extra effort to get to the beautiful island of Sardinia, which is known for its splendid beaches and gorgeous nature. Adults and kids alike will love the rich traditions and folklore in Sardinia. The Giara plateau is a great place to spot the wild ponies that inhabit the area, or head to the Asinara National Park to see albino donkeys and other wildlife. No visit will be complete without time to run through the rugged sand dunes of Piscinas. Here you can also go horseback riding or take a boat trip around the Smeralda coast. Families also enjoy visiting Cagliari’s castle, Neptune’s Caves and spending the day at the cool water park of Diverland.
4. Mallorca, Spain
One of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Mallorca is one of the most popular family-friendly destinations in the Mediterranean area. There are numerous sandy beaches that are safe for little ones. Horseback riding, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding are among the many activities available. The maze-like Arta Caves are sure to capture the imagination of all members of the family. Need some indoor time? Discover the treasures of the ocean without getting wet at the Palma Aquarium. For nature lovers, a boat trip to Cabrera Island is perfect for seeing birds, snorkeling and admiring lovely views from the old castle. In addition to all of the above, the island is also home to several water parks, theme parks and animal encounters.
5. Oludeniz, Turkey
Turkey is the perfect choice for a family holiday with welcoming locals, family friendly resorts and beautiful beaches. It is also great value for money. Picturesque Oludeniz for example, boasts a sheltered lagoon with beautiful fine white sands. Emerald waters gently lap the soft sands providing a great place for older kids (teenagers & adults) can try their hand at paragliding. A visit to the nature reserve of the Blue Lagoon is sure to please the nature lovers in the family. Nearby Fethiye is also a great day-trip destination.
Other family-friendly destinations in the Mediterranean region include Cyprus, most of the Greek islands, Spain’s Costa del Sol and other seaside resorts, Morocco’s Tetouan, Malta and southern France.
