It’s almost that time of year again! The day little boys (and girls) look forward to all year long – trash truck open house! My son equates spring and summer with several things and the opening day to summer in his mind is the LA Sanitation Department’s open house. Sadly for him, we have had absolutely no winter, so he has been confused all winter/spring about what season it is exactly. But now that it’s May he knows it trash truck time and he can’t wait!
We are looking forward to this year to see what’s new. We were surprised by a few awesome additions last year. In addition to being able to push and pull the levers on trucks, the kids were also able to ride around the parking lot in an actual garbage truck. They loved it! For my son though, his favorite was the addition of the sewer truck (above). This is one of his favorite vehicles out on the road.
If you have no idea what we are talking about, check out our post from 2 years ago to get all the details. But if you already know all about it, here’s the information you came looking for – 2017 dates:
Saturday, April 29, 2017 – East Valley District Yard
11050 Pendleton Street, Sun Valley
Saturday, May 6, 2017 – West Valley District Yard
8840 Vanalden Avenue, Northridge
Saturday, May 20, 2017 – North Central District Yard**
452 North San Fernando Road, Los Angeles
Saturday, June 3, 2017 – South Los Angeles District Yard
786 South Mission Road, Los Angeles
Saturday, June 10, 2017 – Harbor District Yard
1400 North Gaffey Street, San Pedro
Saturday, June 24, 2017 – West Los Angeles District Yard
2027 Stoner Avenue, Los Angeles
The festivities begin at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. and usually go until 2:30 p.m. Remember to arrive early or towards the end to avoid the crush of people who turn up in the middle of the day. If you would like a chance at a free tree for your yard, show up early. They disappear quickly! In past years, this was also a great place to recycle your old tires and other items that you aren’t sure what to do with. Contact the sanitation department to find out what they will accept this year.
Parking: Street Parking only, but there is typically plenty on San Fernando Road. Be prepared to walk a bit though.
What to bring: Hat, sunscreen and light clothes – it gets hot!
Food: Hot dogs & Hamburgers and cold drinks are provided free by the Sanitation Department
