If you are anything like me, you tend to wait until the last minute to book anything. And of course for this weekend of love, that is not a good thing since the babysitters have been booked up weeks ago. Instead of moping about that you don’t get to spend a quiet romantic evening as grownups, spend the day outdoors with all of your loves doing something that everyone will enjoy.
Here is a peek at our possible weekend options (that we still haven’t finalized!).
A day out on the waters looking for animals in the wild while spending quality time together as a family sounds like a pretty perfect day to me. Even if for some reason you don’t see any whales, watching the dolphins swim under and right next to the boat for miles makes your heart skip a beat. This is a great time to go, and to make it better, there are always Groupon or Living Social deals available. After your cruise on the open water, have a nice family lunch together and stroll around Dana Point, Long Beach or wherever your boat trip departs from.
Sing by a Campfire at Marsh Park
Want something different to do for the evening? Join the Eastside community in an outdoor fire pit with roasted marshmallows, songs around the campfire and a nature program at Marsh Park. What a fun way to spend the evening with the entire family. Get there early and go for a walk along the LA river. This is my nature loving son’s pick for the day!
Go on a Family Hike
This is always on our possible to do list. We love hiking together as a family. Everyone gets a little alone time, together time and time with mother nature. Our favorite family hike is Monrovia Canyon Falls, but I think we are in the mood for something different. We haven’t been to Switzer Falls in more than a year, which means it’s time to get back there soon!
Spend the day at the beach
It is winter theoretically, but with highs forecasted for the 80s, why not make all of our East Coast friends jealous by spending a family day at the beach. Our favorite day outing beach is always the Leo Carillo. You get beach and tide pools in one place! Saturday’s lowest tide time is forecasted for 12:30 pm, which is perfect for families with kids. To maximize your time exploring the caves and tide pools, get there early (up to 1-2 hrs before low tide time). For something different, check out the Dana Point Sea Caves or head down to Victoria Beach in Laguna to see the exposed Victorian Tower.
Enjoy free days at a National Park
This weekend is a free weekend at all National Parks, so now is your chance to check out Joshua Tree, Death Valley or even Sequoia for free. I am certain there will be crowds, but these parks are large enough that you can always find a place to escape people. You can easily make it a day trip to Joshua Tree, however you will need to look for last minute accommodation if you venture further to Death Valley or Sequoia. Both would be worth the extra effort for a last minute getaway!
